The very first portable ice box to be launched onto the market was attributed to Richard Laramy whose application for a US patent was accepted by the US Patent Office on 24th February, 1951. This patent was granted on 22nd December 1953 and, although marketing these early coolers took a route all its own, Laramy of Joliet Illinois became the owner of the first US patent for the technology that encompassed all future insulated boxes. This is not to say that the concept behind the insulated boxes hadn't been long thought of and available on the market many years before. Richard Laramy, however, was the first person to apply for, and be granted, a US patent for this product.
